THE WEAKNESS OF HUMAN MEMORY

Written on October 27, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

cerebro2The human brain is still a great enigma to us all, but as we continue to discover the brain´s powerful potential, we become aware, at the same time, of some of its weaknesses.

As a matter of fact, I came across a news item “Consiguen implantar falsos recuerdos en la memoria mediante técnicas de sugestión” (instilling false memories via techniques of suggestion) which shows how a group of researchers at the University of California-Irvine have studied one of the great weaknesses of human memory, namely the ease with which it may be tricked.

Thay investigated the possibility of creating fictional events in the lives of a group of people by means of suggestion, as well as changing real events using the same technique. The experiment succeeded in showing how these persons remembered events as real, exactly as they had been told.

VIRTUAL BEHAVIOUR

Written on October 26, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

SchoolPsychology2Currently, psychologists find themselves operating within a new sphere of human action, namely that of virtual communication, froming part of the technological progress which surrounds us.

Consequently, a group of students at IE University has decided to carry out research into the this virtual world, little known to psychology. The main objetive of their study is the analysis of virtual-behaviour characteristics, possiblilities and psychosocial risks, with the final aim of designing tools and techniques for evaluation and assessment.

Studies undertaken in the principle virtual platforms, including those as well-known as “Second Life”, suggest that althoughvirtual behaviour has its own particular qualities, it is strongly conditioned by the user´s personal characteristics (motivation, attitudes to privacy and the medium itself, assumed roles).

Finally, we can highlight the creation of a “Virtaul Behaviour Research and Assessment Center” to attend the psychosocial needs identified.

HOW DOES THE BODY INFLUENCE OUR MINDS?

Written on October 26, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

posturas1The great influence of the body on the mind is well-known, but the power of body posture goes beyond what we had previously thought according to an article “La postura corporal influye en la confianza de los pensamientos” (Body posture influences the confidence of thinking). Research, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology carried out by the professor of the Department of Social Psychology and Health at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Pablo Briñol, along with collaborators, Richard Petty and Ben Wagner from Ohio State University, has obtained results which show how body posture affects the mind in a far more complex way than one might first have imagined. This is clearly demonstrated by the meta-cognitive process called “self-reinforcement”, whereby the confidence which results from a firm body posture reinforces any thoughts which we may have in that moment.

PSYCHOLOGISTS ARRIVE IN SPACE TO ANALYSE PSYCHOSOCIAL FACTORS

Written on October 15, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

Many studies have been made about space but rarely have missions taken into account the important role played by psychosocial factors as one of the fundamental limitations to the success of research.

For this reason, the European Space Agency (ESA) has decided to finance the first European research team (thanks to an agreement with the University of Cadiz), made up of five psychologists and psychiatrist, who will be in charge  of studying psychosocial factors and neurobehaviours of the space mission crews.

How idea arose, its creation, the explanation of what these psychosocial factors are, as well as their prevention and the protection variables involved, etc, are many of the questions we can ask while listening to the news: you can find the answer in the interview published by COP: “The psychosocial factors in manned space missions-interview with Gabriel González de la Torre”.

CAN BRAIN ACTIVITY BE UNDERSTOOD?

Written on October 15, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

1072657_brainy_peopleWe all know the importance of an organ such as the brain for every human being. It´s complexity is incalculable, its diversity of function, pathologies, components, etc, combined with the difficult of studying it have made it, and still make it, a great mystery to researchers.

Thanks to a study developed by Tom M. Mitchell and his collaborators at the University of Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh (United States) an approximation towards an understanding of cerebral activity has been obtained using an information systems model which acts as a tool for identifying and understanding cognitive processes and for developing treatments for specific problems pertaining to language and learning.

BUY, BUY, BUY

Written on October 15, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

consumo 3Nowadays, advertising uses a vast range of persuasion techniques enticing consumers to buy products. But prior to the fulfilment of advertising and marketing objectives, which is the sale of products, there is a huge research project into both the product being sold and the consumer to whom the products are being targeted. With regards to the latter, it is very important to know their lifestyle and the way they think, their values, likes, attitudes, how to attract their attention etc. In other words, the study of human behaviour is absolutely essential and that´s where psychology comes in, or more specifically the contribution of Social psychology.

To create new needs and as a consequence stimulate our tendency to purchase, the advertiser knows that the product itself is of least significance and that the main protagonist is what will be associated with each one and the emotions they produce such as security, happiness, comfort, etc.

You can see for yourselves in the sort drink and car advertisements.

HOW CAN THE RELIABILITY OF A WILL BE RECKONED?

Written on October 15, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

Fiabilidad 2Rarely or perhaps never, do we ask ourselves how it is possible that in a field as important as civil law, we never consider the need to investigate and innovate with regards to the truthfulness and veracity of wills, given that the statements of witnesses are the primary evidence in judicial processes: they are key components.

However, these highly-prozed elements may, in many cases, lack credibility. This is due to the fact that statements may include events, situations, facts, or persons which in reality took no part in the actual context: we call this false recollection and it is this which creates the need for studies concerning witness´ memory and recall.

There is a large amount of research on this topic, finding connections and correlations with regards to the witness´ age, their degree of involvement in the events being investigated, and the great influence which the kind of interrogation may have.

PUT YOUR ATTENTION TO THE TEST

Written on October 1, 2009 by PsychIE Author in Uncategorized

Atención2The number of stimuli received by our organism simultaneously is incalculable: our brain is unable to assimilate them all (we would go mad) and only selects those which are really necessary in accordance with the activity we are undertaking. That is, we pay attention to one stimulus or another depending on the task we wish to carry out.

As we´ve seen, attention capacity is a powerful, important tool, which helps us concentrate on the thing we are doing and carry it out correctly.

This video will prove what has just been said and, what´s more, if you can keep your attention on a particular task, just follow the instructions.
